Living to Serve

Fall 2021

**WORK IN PROGRESS**
Wakefield FFA and Alumni are working together to create a chicken coop that is more "sustainable".  The chicken coop will have a rooftop garden AND have a watering system created from a rain barrel.

Wakefield Garden Army: uniting Wolverines and Eagles in the battle against hunger

The Garden Army meets every other Wednesday at Wakefield Elementary in the garden. This joint project partners WHS FFA members with WES students. Students work to learn about gardening, donate their harvests to those in need and fuel themselves with popsicles after a hard day's work.

Keep the Garden A-Buzzin'

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live.”
-- Maurice Maeterlinck, The Life of the Bee

Vision

The "Bee Keepers" of Wakefield High will inform local elementary students about the importance of bees, the process of plant growth, and how both play an important role for the survival of "life".

Observatory Hive

An FFA Alumni (and previous student), Hayden Schug, currently has a business where he assists people in setting up their personal beehives.  Hayden has an observatory hive, which he will bring to the elementary school on our last visit in order to allow the students to see an "active" beehive.

Soil and Plant Growth

The "Bee Keepers" of Wakefield High will teach the local 3rd grade teachers about the various layers of soil, nutrients needed for plants to grow, and help the students plant their own pollinator plants to place in their gardens at home.

Pollinator Garden

The amazing Horticulture teacher (Jodi Riedel) has graciously donated a raised bed to our grant.  The raised bed will be the location of our pollinator plants where bees will hopefully become attracted to and pollinate.
